I grew up in central Connecticut, and I loved writing from a very young age. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and went on to receive my MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Despite the magic that is springtime in the south, I knew upon graduating from UNCG that my future lay back in New England.
Since 1997, I have had the privilege of teaching media and English at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. My published works include Utten and Plumley (2003), released by Hampton Roads Publishing, and The Pricker Boy (2009), published by Random House. Over the years, I have taught writing to both students and teachers and have been fortunate to lead summer workshops with the Cape Cod Writers Center, the National Writing Project, and other organizations.
In addition to my professional pursuits, I enjoy gardening, cooking, reading, and watching films. My greatest source of joy, however, is my family. Through my work in writing at UMass Dartmouth, I met my wife, who is a far better teacher than I could ever hope to be. Together, we are raising two wonderful children, and the simple pleasure of spending time with them at home is my greatest joy—right up there with Star Trek, good mustard, and the music of Bruce Springsteen.
I believe that writing, much like exercise, is vital for the mind—it strengthens cognition and nourishes the soul. Like physical exercise, good writing requires effort and dedication. Though the process can be challenging and occasionally frustrating, the rewards are immense. In the end, the work will enrich your life, and you’ll be grateful for having undertaken the journey.
